Bull Shoals Lake
This photo was taken from the Bull Shoals Dam in May. Please note the absence of homes and other signs of shoreline development. While boating or hiking on trails around the lake, residents and visitors enjoy the natural beauty of the serene, uncluttered shoreline. If you look closely, you can see Lakeview Marina in the distance to the right of center, with the launching and swim area to the left of the Marina.

If you have been reading real estate ads for Bull Shoals or Norfork Lake (the twin lakes located east and west of Mountain Home, AR) you may have seen some ads which read, "home borders the government strip". This article briefly explains "The Strip".

Bull Shoals and Norfork Dams are 2 of 5 dams in the White River Basin managed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers for flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and recreational purposes. The shoreline around each of the lakes created by the construction of these dams is managed by the Corps of Engineers. The distance along the shoreline between the water and private property varies greatly depending on the terrain and water level of the lake at any particular time. The "Strip" protects the private property from being flooded as the lake level fluctuates. The Strip may be crossed on foot, but trees cannot be cut from it without permission, which is given very rarely, because the Strip protects the wildlife habitat in and around the lakes, as well as limits soil erosion and pollution. There are some areas where boat docks are allowed, but most residents find it more convenient to use the easily accessed public marinas and boat launching areas around the lakes.

The rare photos above were taken at Bull Shoals State Park just a few miles from the Beaman Realty office in Lakeview. Two albino fawns and their "momma" were "captured" (on film) by Jim Griffin, Bull Shoals Lake White River State Park Superintendent. Wildlife abounds in the Twin Lakes Area partially due to Corps of Engineer, State Parks, and the government strip, which protect their natural environment.

For more information, contact one of the Beaman Realty agents, who can explain why the "Strip" is one of the most important reasons why people who want to see a shoreline free of condos, homes, boat docks and people, choose the Twin Lakes area for their home.
